Bulphan as a village is recorded in the Domesday Book, but in those days the name was Bulgeuen. Since then the name has undergone many changes and even in recent years the name was spelled Bulvan.

Our village church dates back to the 15th century, and in common with several other churches in Essex, one of its features is the massive timber-work which supports the bell tower. During the last century, the external timber cladding on the tower was replaced by tiles. The church also has a screen which is reputed to have come from Barking Abbey.

For most of 1997 and part of 1998 the church was closed for major restoration works. We were able to carry out this work thanks to a bequest from the late "Pix" Cole. The work was carried out in such a way as to change the interior or exterior aspects very little. It was re-dedicated on Saturday 4th April 1998.

It was just over 100 years since the previous major restoration, carried out in Victorian times by Revd. Littlehales. The picture below shows how the church looked in 1870, prior to that restoration.
